Therapy Today Article: Men and therapy

© This article was first published in Therapy Today, the journal of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)

I was commissioned to write a piece about men’s mental health for Therapy Today to celebrate Movember. I was lucky enough to interview some really amazing therapists, thinkers, academics, researchers and campaigners. Everyone involved contributed so much to the piece and I am very grateful to all the effort that went into making this piece what it is.

The piece was the Big Issue article for the magazine in November 2024 and features specially commissioned artwork throughout. The article is available to read here.

It asks how therapists can make their services more accessible to men and offers some examples of initiatives that are finding ways to do so.

The piece, subtitled ‘Myths, Misconceptions and Missed Opportunities’, focusses on ways in which mental health services have failed to engage with men effectively. It asks how therapists can make their services more accessible to men and offers some examples of initiatives that are finding ways to do so.

Contributors shared their thoughts on: developing how we promote our services, adapting our delivery to better meet men’s needs, changing how we interpret the behaviour of our male clients and how to identify and work with male socialisation.

Hopefully this article shines a light on some of the amazing work that is being done to promote accessibility within mental health services. My hope is that some of these initiatives can be learned from and replicated as a result.
