Therapy Today article: Valuing distraction
For the March 2023 edition of Therapy Today, the BACP’s monthly journal, I wrote an article entitled ‘Valuing Distraction’. The piece focused on issues that therapists may encounter when working with clients with ADHD. The piece drew on historical context, research, theory and lived experience. You can read it here
Many clients with ADHD who approach therapy may struggle to identify whether or not their therapist is equipped to work with them. Many therapists may not have thought about some of the more subtle normative assumptions they are making about their clients. This article introduces some aspects of ADHD that therapists need to hold in awareness and that may require further learning and reflection.
If you are a therapist working with clients with ADHD then this article may offer food for thought. If you are a client with ADHD wanting to know how to get the best out of therapy, this article may highlight some common mistakes made by therapists.
